"I ran away from Lutherans"

by Gypsi Deyoung

I was raised in Minnesota in a small farming community, went to a Lutheran church, was a member of Luther League and was a Sunday school teacher when I was in high school. When I graduated from high school I decided I wanted a more exciting life...away I Los Angeles...New York City...Los Angeles...married an actor...lived and worked in Europe. Then I had a child...moved to Thousand Oaks for the school system...saw an ad in the Ventura Star for California Lutheran...on a whim applied. I said to my husband "If I get this job, I am going to take it. I can work with Lutherans." All those basement church suppers have not been in vain. Much to my surprise, 5 years later I am still here. It feels a little bit like home.
