Position Title
Director of Marketing for Advancement
University Marketing
Basic Function
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for University Marketing, and collaborating closely with the university’s Advancement Division, the Advancement Marketing Director will plan, develop and implement marketing initiatives that support the Annual Fund, Alumni & Parent Relations, Major & Planned Gifts, Corporate Foundation Relations and special fundraising operations. The Director will immerse him or herself in the dynamics of Advancement at California Lutheran University to develop an intimate understanding of key audiences, programs and tactical needs; and will engage the University Marketing department to develop marketing executions that address those needs.
Representative Duties
• Develops an annual strategic marketing plan for advancement. This plan would include definition and prioritization of key audiences and the messages and tactics that will motivate them to engage with Cal Lutheran. E

• Based on the annual plan, develops quarterly tactical plans, timelines and progress reports. E

• Manages the creation of collateral, direct mail/email, web, video and social media tactics to support Advancement initiatives; determines the appropriate content, creative direction, personnel and timeline for each request; coordinates execution of the project with in-house or outsourced teams as appropriate; communicates frequently about project status to both the marketing and advancement teams; and ensures that projects are produced on time and within budget. • Ensures that all Advancement marketing materials are aligned with the Cal Lutheran brand in message, tone and visuals. E

• Manages the social media presence of Advancement, including Facebook pages. In the future, Twitter, Pinterest or other social media forums may be activated. Creates (or coordinating the creation of) and posts relevant content on an appropriately frequent basis, as well as responding to others’ posts in a timely manner. E

• Provides oversight of the production of newsletters distributed by each department to their constituencies. This may include determining the appropriate content for each issue, writing articles (or overseeing freelance writers) and assembling visual assets within a pre-defined template. E

• Performs light copywriting or copyediting functions for projects that do not require the services of a professional copywriter. E

• Manages external partners working on Advancement Marketing initiatives, including branding firms, designers, ad agencies or copywriters. E

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Lead and motivate internal and external project teams to develop compelling marketing strategies and materials
• Ensure that marketing materials are aligned with the Cal Lutheran brand and adhere to guidelines provided
• Work on and deliver multiple projects simultaneously
• Write and edit copy
• Present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
• Prepare marketing plans and reports that are clear and strategic
• Meet targets and deadlines
• Utilize Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and other social media sites
• Operate a computer and other office equipment
• Manage and reconcile budgets
• Measure the effectiveness of marketing programs, both qualitative and quantitative
Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ experience in marketing, advertising or non-profit development/fundraising.
Work Environment
Professional office environment, with heavy computer use. Within a given week, the employee may spend a significant portion of time in both the Marketing and Advancement offices, having a dedicated workspace in each office. This position will also frequently attend meetings in all areas of the campus.
