Basic Function
Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Library Services, the Manager of Collection Development oversees the Pearson Library’s print collection as well as manages and coordinates the physical sciences collections (bioengineering, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics) and the ethnic and gender studies collections (gender & women studies, and global studies). The position develops strategic plans to enhance the quality of the overall collection over time and effectively manage limited physical space in the Pearson Library Works in close collaboration with the Manager of Cataloging and Acquisitions.
Representative Duties
• Leads collection development activities, updates collection development policy, and subject collection policies.
• Leads program efforts critical to the Libraries' collection strategies such as: building and stewarding distinctive collections; shifting collecting focus from print to electronic resources; periodic and ongoing review of continuations; designing and implementing standards and methods for selection, de-selection, review and replacement of subject collections.
• Conducts collection analysis and evaluates current holdings based on course curricula and class syllabi; collaborates with Information Specialists in analyzing trends in collection use and distribution of funds across academic disciplines.
• Effectively selects materials in the assigned subject area to support the curriculum; evaluates gift materials and collections for usefulness; makes decisions for purchase or providing access of collections resources.
• Acts as the liaison for the library's approval plan with YBP Library Services; manages the Pearson Library approval plan profile in coordination with information specialists and liaisons to the academic departments to ensure that coverage corresponds to current curricular and research needs.
• Coordinates and supports the work of the information specialists and liaisons to academic departments to develop specific collections.
• Monitors budgets; drafts budgets; prepares budget analyses; in collaboration with the Manager of Cataloging and Acquisitions, maintains record of budgeted items related to the acquisition of print/media materials and administers the library materials budget to print resources acquisitions in support of curricula.
• Utilizes and maintains Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) for digital e-book collections.
• Prepares documents and reports related to the library for Program Reviews.
• Provides effective and consistent communications with campus constituencies regarding the library’s general collections; manages the Pearson Library’s web and social media presence.
• Provides scholarship and service in building and maintaining a research and service profile related to library collections, including such duties as: writes and maintains Internet subject resources guide in support of the curriculum; provides information literacy instruction for classes; develops detailed user guides in support of library collections or electronic resources; facilitates current trends and issues in librarianship and participates in activities of professional/community organizations; and presents and publishes at appropriate venues.
• Serves as a liaison to various faculty, departments, staff, students, and outside vendors and publishers.
• Manages the Pearson Library’s web presence (website and social media accounts – Facebook, Twitter).
• Plans, coordinates, and organizes author visits in collaboration with other departments and personnel.
• Serves on committees as appropriate.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Of
• Knowledge of current principles, trends and best practices of library collection development and technical services administration.

• Knowledge of personal computers and various types of systems and applications software including library cataloging and acquisitions systems.

Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to: A Master’s degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution, or related field and three or more years of professional library experience in the areas of collection development, acquisitions, or technical services.

• Position may require ability to work on weekends.
Most work is performed in a normal library and office environment. Daily work involves extensive computer use and often involves receiving, handling and moving library materials and moving between buildings and rooms.
