Position Title
Instructional Designer

Basic Function
Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Instructional Designer provides instructional and program design expertise for the development and support of online courses and specialized educational programs. The Instructional Designer is responsible for assisting faculty in the design of online coursework/programs and instructional practices, development of learning resources and re-visioning of courses and course segments to electronic delivery methods. Supports the customized development of online courses unique to the needs of the instructor and students, particularly in the development and conversion of courses to create distance, hybrid, or face-to-face (F2F) courses; or transform conventional courses to distance or hybrid modes of instruction.
Representative Duties
• Collaborates with faculty on course design, course development, and instructional design issues.
• Manages course development projects from inception to completion; provides ongoing feedback and assistance to faculty and instructors for further enhancements of online and hybrid courses.
• Develops web-based resources and tutorials to assist faculty in teaching with technology.
• Identifies, applies, and integrates the appropriate blend of pedagogy and technology into the course curriculum; guides the selection and development of instructional strategies for on-line and hybrid environments; recommends appropriate learning tools to achieve course objectives based on current instructional design theories and/or educational best practices.
• Develops, coordinates and facilitates workshops, events, and other opportunities that help faculty integrate technologies that enhance the teaching and learning experience in on-line, hybrid, and face-to-face courses.
• Maintains knowledge of new and emerging technologies and curricular practices; tests the technologies and applications and analyzes the feasibility of their adoption; keeps abreast of the current literature on learning theory and learning practices in higher education; attends appropriate conferences and seminars.
• Analyzes and conducts assessments of curricular projects, technologies, and practices for quality improvement in teaching and learning.
• Provides training and support to faculty and staff in the use of the course management system (LMS) in both group and individual settings; provides outreach and end-user support to users and potential users of the system.
• Designs and supervises production of learning objects in a variety of formats including print, graphics, audio, video, and animation technologies to support online coursework and programs.
• Leads major educational technology projects that require coordinating staff and resources, both within the Center for Teaching and Learning as well as well as across campus units.
• Plans and manages projects for the introduction of new learning technologies.
• Serves as a member of discipline-focused and cross-institutional teams that provide integrated services to faculty.
• Serves as a liaison to key campus groups and constituents.
• Participates in formal and informal communications planning and efforts.
• Performs other duties assigned.

• Training principles and techniques.
• Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and Outlook), internet, data entry techniques, and database management.

• Communicate effectively, both in written and oral form, to LMS users of differing abilities and learning styles.
• Design and redesign course materials for teaching and utilizing new and emerging distance education technologies, web page production, and multimedia technologies.
• Assess and evaluate a variety of teaching methods and strategies and recommend appropriate use of technology in the classroom and for online and other alternative delivery courses.
• Create effective teaching and learning environments using alternative instructional delivery methods and online course management tools.
• Implement best practices in the use of technology tools and applications in the University environment.
Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to:
• Master’s degree in instructional design, instructional technology, educational technology, education, communications, information technology, curriculum design, or related field is required.
• Three years of relevant experience in e-learning, instructional design, course design, learning technology, multimedia projects, course management applications, or related experience.

• Portfolio samples of prior instructional design work may be requested.
• Occasional travel to attend conferences and presentations.
• Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
