Basic Function
Under the direction of the Director of Educational Technology, the Audio/Video Engineer supports the university’s goal of providing flawless technology rich venues that support the University’s curricular and co-curricular mission and auxiliary programs and events. This individual participates in long range planning for classroom, conference and special event technology upgrades; assists in managing all classroom and conference/special event technology installations and maintenance; serves as a point of contact for resolving most presentation technology problems by coordinating with all campus personnel involved in supporting classroom and conference/special event environments.
Representative Duties
• Support audio & video systems across campus including high profile and special events, lectures, streaming lectures and concerts.
• forest-up video equipment and stream lectures, concerts, and other special events.
• Diagnose and repair malfunctioning electronic equipment, systems and components; schedule timely maintenance; establish and maintain records for parts inventory, repairs, and maintenance and upgrades of audio/video equipment; research and recommend equipment and system purchases.
• Provide demonstrations and training on A/V equipment use to Events staff, student workers, and other CLU employees as assigned; in addition, trains media services staff on equipment repairs and replacement.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, isolate and repair all media equipment for classroom support, including more complex electronic equipment and systems including but not limited to multimedia systems, video/data projections systems, video recording/playback cameras, camcorders, monitors, white boards, Extron control systems, and other problematic equipment. Troubleshoots malfunctions in emergency situations and perform emergency repairs, in a high-pressure environment, at University locations such as classrooms, conference and seminar rooms.
• Transfer digital media to servers (podcasting and streaming).
• Keep and maintain accurate records for the billing of repairs/installation time, personnel, supplies, etc.
• Assist in recommending improvements to the annual facility upgrade process, as appropriate, and conducting follow-up assessments with classroom and special event venue users to determine whether expectations were met.
• Administer Extron systems by installing, configuring, managing and updating software and firmware.
• Notify Media Services / ISS staff when equipment is repaired to ensure its return to proper storage areas. Maintain repair/maintenance/preventative maintenance schedule for MS/ISS equipment.
• Design, fabricate if needed, and install classroom presentation systems. Mount and install electric and manual projections screens, LCD Projectors, PA systems, amplifiers, etc.
• Design and program classroom/lab control systems.
• Maintain equipment, align and calibrate in a video studio system and for production and post-production environments.
• Remain available to the client/guests’ needs throughout their event.
• Other duties as assigned by the Director, which may include maintenance, production, team management of special project work teams; strategic planning for increasing faculty support with new instructional technologies.
• Assist in day-today operations of ISS.
• Assist in the design and installation of digital (HD) video studio systems for production and post-production.
• Locate and contact vendors, initiate purchase request process and keep inventory control and stock of appropriate parts and supplies for a wide variety of audio, video, and display technology. Manage the parts and supplies inventory to support the operations of ISS.
• Purchase, up to a pre-determined amount per-purchase and per-month, supplies, parts, and equipment, etc., without prior approval.
• Consult with departments, faculty, and staff regarding their needs and desires and develop, within monetary constraints, technology solutions to improve their effectiveness and instructional goals.
• Provide on-going training to ISS staff on how to make minor classroom equipment repairs; removal and replacement of defective classroom media equipment and troubleshooting techniques and skills to accurately identify defective classroom media equipment.
Knowledge Of
• Network infrastructure relating to transfer of media from classrooms to the servers.

• Innovative classroom technology and media such as capturing, podcasting. (REQUIRED)
• Equipment maintenance, alignment, and calibration for digital (HD) video studios and suites for the production and post-production environment. (Preferred)
• Live sound reinforcement and PA Systems (REQUIRED)
• A/V control systems and interfaces.
• Instructional technology equipment usage including audio, video, computer display, signal distribution, classroom control systems.
• Instructional technology equipment specifications and their relationship to applications, teaching methodologies, multimedia systems and faculty preferences.
• Construction techniques and fabrication materials such as woodworking, drywall, cable installation, unistrut installation and concrete anchoring techniques.
• Writing and presentation skills.
• Video and audio production.
• Technical documentation fundamentals.
• Computer skills using word processing, database creation and maintenance, email, web searching, and CAD.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Ability To
• Research technology and recommend new approaches. Experience in electronics, coordinating projects involving various personnel, such as technicians, architects, engineers, facility maintenance, faculty and administrators in a University setting.
• Set up and stream live video feeds for sports, lectures and other special events.
• Make decisions, be organized, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
• Work with basic hand tools, lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders and use scissor lifts, electronics soldering, including cables, assemblies, and circuits.
• Work well under pressure to effectively diagnose and troubleshoot problems in a short period of time.
• Exercise initiative and good judgment; Maintain positive approach despite conflicting deadlines, shifting priorities and simultaneous work demands. Organize, categorize and prioritize workload effectively and efficiently, under minimal supervision.

• Assist with the operation of compressed video teleconferencing systems, television production equipment and other instructional technology support service activities. Effective supervisory and interpersonal skills are required.

• Quickly learn and update new technology related to classroom instruction.

Education and Experience

Associates Degree with an emphasis in Telecommunications Electronics and/or Video Production. 5 years experience with audio/visual equipment and control systems including installation, configuration, operation, troubleshooting and maintenance.

Valid California driver’s license.
