Miller Moths

Meghan Calhoun Johnston

Descend on Midwest towns
winged agents of evening June
who
like a hundred horror movie moments
wait in corners and around the bend.

Miller Moths

Conduct a nighttime symphony
of firecracker pops in July
when
I lie with blanket pulled to childhood's chin
sweating, sweltering, shielding myself
praying that darkness will chase them
from my room to seek more enlightening pursuits.

Miller Moths

Live and die in Kansas cupboards
(poor fellows of August!)
while
butterfly cousins dance in gardens
and delight the children.
