Autumn

Edward B. Wahl

The blackened pepper season filtered leaves
as pinkish sunset warnings have foretold
because the poisoned "Bringing in the Sheaves"
are sparkly hued and Earth tones copper bold.

The greenish cotton candy on a stick
is now becoming litter on the grass
and sparser hollowed out and lesser thick
a skull and cross-bone skeleton morass.

Electric wind and news print ribbon flight
are like spaghetti roller coaster tracks
that eddy in the tide pools of the night
and roll away to die, repose, relax.

As winter cometh as it always will
I cuddle in my blankets, quiet, still.
