Ivy Dreams

Scott Condit

I awoke from a dream in a sadness of sorts, for we were walking through a deep ivy forest,

Hand in hand, stride in stride, as the paths of our lives stretch before us.

And as we walked, the shadows grew short, and the mists on the leaves started lifting.

And the sun shed light on a spot up ahead where the
paths of our lives started shifting.

We saw the spot but paid it no heed, and we laughed
and we talked and grew near.

For the good things in life, the precious, the few, grow
out of love and not out of fear.

So we continued to walk, and continued to talk, and
that spot in our path finally came,

Where it turned to the left and turned to the right, and
we knew we could not chose the same.

So there we stood at the crossroads of time, each with
a tear in our eye,

Then I took your hand, held you near, and with pain
in my heart said goodbye.

As I said these words, you loosened your grip, then I
kissed you and turned to go,

But something stopped me, and I turned back around,
because there is something you need to know.

We may both journey far, on our own separate paths,
through the tangles and thorns and the pain.

But the lessons we learn, the lessons of life, will not have been sought out in vain.

For up on my path, yours too if you look, in the deepest part of the forest,

Our paths will join, and again we will walk, together, as our lives stretch before us.
