Standing Still

Gibson Holub

I've been peeling off pieces
of my chapped lips
like peeling bark off a tree.
So then if I split myself
in half through the waist
will I be able to count the
age rings and determine that I am
twenty and have had some rough times.
So now if I do not bathe
will my armpits reek of
pine or redwood and
my hair matt into tangles of ivy.
It seems now that my toes
have dug into the earth
and grounded me with an
intricate web of roots.
Here come two lovers
to lay beneath my boughs
         to cuddle,
                  to kiss,
to pick small flowers for one another.
I suppose that when they are finished
they will carve "love" in my trunk
and I will bear the scar through time.
