The quiet hush of night-air settled in around the hearth and pulled the lights down dimly behind. In the amber light of the wood-soft glow, the fire crackled and licked the cold air above with tongues of gold rooted in blue hollows that throbbed, deep, in wells of glowing black. Cascades of orange coals tumbled, hot, from the fire-cave below and spilled out on the colder ash. . . pinpoints of white fire glittering in the grey like stars.
