We who were are.

Mario Tofano

We who smiled knowing the mind and universe are one
Passed the afternoon staring at clouds
Discussing the danger of angels.

We who fertilized body and earth with the divine
Encompassed by smoke and fog on November sidewalks
Screaming 12-chord blues under sexed gazebos pulling rum.

We who wept family hardship on truck beds drinking dark ale
Ecstatically singing Love wildly stomping knee to hand
Perpetually barbiturated driving hysterically through sinful streets.

We who made merit chanting Avalokitesvara
Turned on sunshine vibrations howling laughter from cubed sugar at midnight
Sedated by blue note progressions gods emitted.

We who awoke tattered and torn headaching polluted gasping water
Envisioned revolutions crippled by ambitions
Tragic heroes committing to constitutions of diverging passions.

We who exchanged thoughts endorsed by times we never knew
Searching kaleidoscope-eyed heavenward discontented
Sailing inward terrified head split by concepts never quite grasped.

We who meditatively collected courage
Romantics ingesting glorious seeds freeing atman temporarily
Inhaling sleep at dawn.

We who wandered campus cowering away from ominous green exits
Experienced dancing stars through children’s eyes
Measuring depth on shadows fooled by Maya’s veil.

We who gazed piercing man’s murky façade
Aided by Smuckers jelly effectively slipping in and out of consciousness
Chugging brandy to gather our wits.

We who jumped trains drunk with adventure tap tapping to Parisian café guitar
Rambled aimlessly experiencing draped in grappa and hashish
Sure to find love if only we spoke with another tongue.

We who wrote poetry entranced breathing fennel raised our clenched fists moonward
Praising man the arts the gods still never praying
Wearily admiring infinite space beachside confronting finitude.

We who blanketed by rain felt flat--------------------lined pulses reanimate
Refreshed in early spring summer and fall eons away
Wrapping our wrists with existential symphonies.

We who deserted deserts fearing black holed Armageddon
Understanding neon comfort upon return
Craving chaotic cultural calamity past present future coursed for collision.

We who charmed birds sheep skinned
Whispering beauty evolving adapting as needed
Peacock feathered hawks chirp chirping chirped.

We who designed kamikaze civilian rockets
Time warped midnight martial artists
Consoling alienated islands crying friendship.

We who examined posters televising insanity
Experienced universal awareness
Gauging heart beats per minute fading away.

We who tripped stuck for millennia
Seeking winter weather warmed noses
Admiring curious cats as sages.

We who were madmen lunatics savage lovers
Thinking inventing exercising freedom innocently
We who smiled knowing the mind and universe are one.
