As an artist, my purpose is to show up to the easel and do my work. Whether outcomes are good or not so good, to show up and give all of themselves to the work at hand is the most important thing that my students can learn from me. When I see those that have taken that to heart, I know I have done my job.

When I was a freshman, one of my high school teachers said, 'She's going to be a researcher—that's just what she wants to do.' This research, to me, could be life changing, and it's also something that I absolutely love.

I believe the most important factor in helping students discover their purpose is letting them understand that individuals adopt, pursue or fulfill their purpose through many different paths in their lives and that very often their purpose in life changes. Purpose is a force that pushes your existence, but is not an unyielding one. What is important is that all your goals are aligned with having a meaningful existence that goes beyond the self.
