Elizabeth Helms

As conductor, music director, collaborative pianist, music educator and church musician, Elizabeth Helms plays an integral part in building and sustaining a strong, vibrant musical community in Ventura County.  An adjunct faculty member at California Lutheran University, she teaches and coaches piano and vocal students in the Music Department.  She also works with the Gold Coast Concert Chorus, the Master Chorale of Ventura County, Ventura College Music Department, and Church of the Foothills.   Elizabeth received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Redlands, and then pursued graduate work in piano performance at Central Washington University.  She earned a Master of Arts from California Lutheran University in 2005.

Musical Director of the Gold Coast Concert Chorus and Principal Collaborative Pianist and Associate Conductor of the Master Chorale of Ventura County, Ms. Helms’ skills have been given high praise by such choral luminaries as Vance George, Conductor Emeritus of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Boris Brott, Music Director of the New West Symphony, and Paul Salamunovich, Music Director Emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

A teacher at Ventura College since 1990, Ms. Helms has taught choir, music fundamentals, musicianship, and coordinated the Private Lessons Program.   She culminated many years as accompanist and coach for the Opera Workshop by musically directing and producing four musicals and two operas during her three year tenure as Music Director.

Creating challenging learning and performance opportunities in a positive, generous environment, and helping students of all ages to find and nurture their musical voice is the focus of her work with the students of California Lutheran University, Ventura College, her choral and theatre groups, and the many piano and vocal students she has taught.   Ms. Helms’ deep belief in the value of music education and her enthusiasm for the collaborative arts makes her a sought after teacher, accompanist and conductor.
