Studying abroad in Berlin was incredible because I was able to witness first-hand the culture and language that I had been learning about for so many years. Some of the highlights were being able to study at a German university, travel around Europe, and live with a host family. I came back to Cal Lutheran with a better understanding of my place in the world, eager to continue my studies in German with a new perspective.

I fell in love with street art while studying abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Working with Dr. Fiore, I decided to focus on Latinas making street art in Los Angeles. This art form is male-dominated, but a small number of women are demonstrating incredible power in their craft. I wanted to meet these women, assess how their work was being received by their male counterparts, and learn how their involvement in this art form aided in the development of their self-identities. There is very little scholarly work being done in this area, so my project was the first of its kind.

My travel seminar Treasures of Peru, taught by Dr. Fiore and Dr. Claussen, was one of the greatest experiences of my life. The opportunity to learn the Peruvian dialect was an indispensable experience in helping me understand Spanish as a living language while refining what I had learned in the classroom at Cal Lutheran. I now have a more holistic view of what it means to be a Spanish learner and how my major intersects with culture and people, going beyond language.
