Glynn, Katie A., The Effects of Family Dynamics on a Child's Self-Esteem and Academic Success

Previous research has found that an unstable family structure and poor family functioning have negative effects on a child’s academic performance and self-esteem. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate to what extent family structure and cohesion impact self-esteem and GPA in college students. Participants were given questionnaires measuring self-esteem, family competence (defined by the level of conflict, communication, cohesion, directive leadership, health, and closeness), family structure, and a self-reported GPA. It is hypothesized that those coming from two-parent families will have higher levels of self-esteem and a higher GPA than those from one-parent or divorced families. It is also hypothesized that those reporting a more competent family will have greater academic success and higher levels of self-esteem.
