Introduction

Transformation and affirmation: these are two of the things that defined 2014–2015 at California Lutheran University.

This was a year of transformation for Cal Lutheran in a variety of ways. Ullman Commons opened and became the new heart of campus, a place where students, faculty, staff and neighbors come together for coffee, meals, meetings and more. Our new Westlake Center opened and renovation of the old cafeteria into a Student Union got underway. Building projects across our locations are not just physical transformations; they also improve the experience of our students.

We also transformed the way we describe ourselves to prospective students and the greater public with new marketing campaigns and a revitalized and contemporary look across all our advertisements, brochures and website. In addition to greater visual appeal, the new materials focus on our mission-driven message that Cal Lutheran is a place where students come to discover and live their purpose.

All these transformations, along with other work done over recent years, culminated with two very big affirmations received just after the end of the academic and fiscal year. In June, we got the welcome news that our regional accreditation with the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) has been renewed for ten years, the maximum allowed under federal law. This was a strong vote of confidence and affirms that we are living out our mission to educate global leaders.

What’s more, our Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program earned accreditation from the American Psychological Association. We applied for this accreditation as soon as we became eligible with the graduation of our first class in May. The APA granted the Psy.D. accreditation for the maximum term of seven years, a remarkable result for a new program.

Progress Report

In May 2012, California Lutheran University’s Board of Regents approved a Five-Year Strategic Plan comprised of five overall goals in support of our mission. Each year, members of the senior leadership develop annual goals in order to support these Five-Year Plan goals. Below you will see our five overall goals and a sampling of efforts completed or achievements related to them during the 2014-2015 fiscal and academic year.

1. Guide students to discover and live their purpose with real-world learning experiences, excellent academic and career mentoring, and a campus environment that promotes inclusion.

57% of the class of 2015 reported participation in an internship or earned academic credit for an internship during their time at Cal Lutheran.

32% reported that they did multiple internships. Students got a taste of the “real world” working at a variety of companies such as Ernst & Young, Farmers Insurance, KTLA 5 News, Make a Wish Foundation, Merrill Lynch, SAGE Publications, ULCA Health and Viacom.

24 faculty-mentored summer research projects were completed over the summer of 2014.

Work included research in biology, chemistry, global studies and psychology. Danielle Montoya ’15 worked with Theresa Rogers, assistant professor of biology, on a study of antibiotic resistance in local waterways. Her work, along with the other summer research projects were funded by more than $110,000 in grants provided by benefactors including Jim and Sue Swenson, The Darling Foundation and The John Stauffer Charitable Trust.

30 undergraduate students presented original research during the 11th Annual Student Research Symposium.

With guidance from faculty mentors, these students conducted research in the fields of biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, exercise science, global studies, mathematics, psychology and religion. The event included the presentation of five awards to the top students as well as oral presentations and an interactive poster session. A number of these students also presented their work at professional conferences (seven students received funding from our Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship to do so) or had their work published in peer-reviewed journals.

Senior Salvador Brito received a $5,000 fellowship award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Exceptional Research Opportunities Program.

“Not only did Cal Lutheran give me the opportunity to pursue an undergraduate degree, it also opened the doors I need to go even further. Thanks to the research I have done at Cal Lutheran with Dr. Grady Hanrahan and Dr. Dennis Revie, I was able to earn a fellowship that sent me to the Baylor College of Medicine over the summer. The help I have received here has further affirmed my purpose and goal of becoming a Neuroscientist!”

He spent the summer researching muscle and neuronal development at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

Lisa Rowan ’14 became the fourth Cal Lutheran student in five years to receive a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant.

Rowan spent eight months teaching English in Nepal during 2014-2015. Participants are chosen for their academic accomplishments and leadership potential. Rowan entered Cal Lutheran as a Presidential Scholar, earned membership in the Scholastic Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, The National Leadership Society, and graduated summa cum laude in May 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. During her time as a Cal Lutheran student, she spent three summers teaching English in Thailand and four months teaching English at a nonprofit organization in Peru. She also conducted research into efforts to improve literacy rates in Latin America.

Our 9th Annual Festival of Scholars held April 27 to May 1, 2015 showcased more than 300 scholarly projects created by undergraduate and graduate students from the College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Education, Graduate School of Psychology and School of Management.

This year’s event included the New Venture Competition finals event, and for the first time, a student and faculty panel showcasing the various forms of experiential learning in Criminal Justice. View the schedule of the sessions and presentations.

The opening of our Westlake Center provided a new home for our Center for Entrepreneurship and start-up incubator.

“The Center for Entrepreneurship’s goal is to become the hub for the Conejo Valley startup community. It includes a co-work space where founders can get their startups launched with the help of advisors and mentors who know the strategic, operational and legal aspects of starting a business. Cal Lutheran also recently began offering an entrepreneurship minor, open to any student, regardless of major. We believe the minor adds value to any graduate’s primary field of study and amplifies the critical thinking skills that all liberal arts students learn.”

In 2014-2015, the Cal Lutheran Center for Entrepreneurship hosted a series of lectures by start-up and technology leaders as well as the New Venture Competition. The New Venture Competition is designed for all Cal Lutheran students to get the experience of starting a business. Beginning in January, about 40 students attended workshops, brainstormed ideas, interviewed potential customers, and developed product ideas with guidance from faculty members and mentors from the community. Five finalist teams pitched their ideas at a special event held during the Festival of Scholars. This year’s winner was Dan Gerharts ’15 for Ryde, a ride-sharing service for college students.

At nine months after graduation, 97% of the class of 2014 reported they were either working or attending graduate school.

Our Career Services office conducted this annual survey of traditional undergraduates with an 84% response rate.

During the 2014-2015 school year, 180 students visited 43 countries through participation in a Study Abroad program.

“I chose the Barcelona travel seminar to explore Europe for the first time and to expand my knowledge of different cultures. The best part about this trip was creating a special bond with my classmates and professors that you wouldn’t experience from just an average college class.”

An increasing number of students are opting to study abroad, with 28% of the class of 2015 participating in a program during their time at Cal Lutheran. Programs include semesters abroad as well as shorter, more focused, travel seminars. A new travel seminar offered in spring 2015 was “Barcelona: Through the Looking Glass.” Following a semester studying Spanish detective fiction, 15 students traveled with Assistant Professor of Spanish, Rafaela Fiore Urizar, and Associate Professor of Mathematics, Michael Gagliardo to Barcelona to witness first-hand the relation between space, architecture and math as it relates to the literature they studied. Students explored the many neighborhoods of Barcelona and had guided tours of the Gothic quarter, las Ramblas, and a number of Gaudi’s most famous buildings. The students were exposed to local culture through a cooking class, museums, musical performances and even a guest lecture from a local author.

In January 2015, Cal Lutheran affirmed its status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

Since January 2014, our total Hispanic enrollment has met the minimum requirement of 25% of our total enrollment, and we have been considered a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) member of HACU. Our HACU membership is part of an ongoing campus initiative to achieve HSI status with the federal government in order to be eligible for a Title V grant so that we may better serve our Hispanic student population.

The Teagle Foundation provided Cal Lutheran an $8,000 grant for interfaith efforts.

Administered by the Interfaith Youth Core, the grant has allowed us to begin exploring new options for delivering interfaith education and programs. In 2014-2015, members of our Religion Department faculty assessed interfaith education in upper division courses and gathered in colloquia to discuss issues surrounding interfaith pedagogical practices, goals, and assessment.

Our Campus Diversity Initiative collaborated with our Office of Multicultural Programs and Residence Life staff to host a new event for first-year students called “Being You at CLU.”

The purpose of the events, held over the course of three nights in September, was to introduce students to the diverse nature of Cal Lutheran’s campus community and focus on the expectation of acceptance and inclusion of all. All first-year students were invited to bring a cultural artifact that represents an aspect of their identity to share with their peers. Resident Advisers led discussion of the artifacts and other topics over a themed meal of Mediterranean, Indian or Thai food.

Our Lunchbox Diversity Series, a professional development program for faculty and staff, was reimagined for the 2014-2015 school year.

All faculty and staff were invited to view a documentary film about various home countries of our international students while enjoying a meal with traditional dishes from those countries. Countries “visited” during these lunches included India, Korea, Brazil, Mexico and Australia.

Our Interfaith Allies student group continued their good work of cultivating a campus community of inclusion and awareness of the diverse faith traditions.

In addition to weekly meetings, they participated in “Faith Matters,” an evening of food trucks and interfaith discussion organized by the Office of Campus Ministry to facilitate a conflict resolution training session, and celebrated “Better Together Day.”

The CLU Choir took their talents and show on the road with a tour of Germany in May.

Stops included Munich, Dresden, Wittenberg and Berlin. The choir performed in a variety of breathtaking and historically significant venues. Particularly significant to our roots and connection to the Lutheran faith tradition was a stop at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig – a church where Martin Luther preached and Bach performed. President Kimball and a group of alumni and friends also participated in a sightseeing tour of Germany and Austria with concurrent stops with the Choir to enjoy their performances.

2. Continue to set high institutional academic standards with distinguished faculty who embody and embrace diversity and with widely respected academic programs.

We submitted our formal evaluation packet with a series of nine essays to the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) for our accreditation review.

This followed the work of multiple teams at Cal Lutheran conducting an extensive self-study between 2011 and 2014 for how we meet the WSCUC’s accreditation criteria for review. We hosted a team of evaluators during a campus visit in April and received notice of our reaccreditation for the maximum allowed term of 10 years in July. In its final report, the commission applauded Cal Lutheran for having a clearly communicated and shared mission, a cross-campus commitment to helping students succeed and an increasingly strong fiscal situation. We submitted a self-study for our Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program to the American Psychological Association (APA) for accreditation review.

After launching the program in 2010, this was the first year Cal Lutheran was eligible to apply for accreditation. We received the news in August that our program is now accredited by the APA for the maximum term of seven years. The Commission on Accreditation commended our Graduate School of Psychology’s program for its thoughtful curriculum, state-of-the-art technology and strong support from university administration.

The first cohort of students in our Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Psy. D.) program graduated in May.

These landmark members of the Class of 2015 can now say they hold a Psy.D. from an APA-accredited institution.

Cal Lutheran’s faculty were awarded nearly $260,000 in grants and contracts in 2014-2015.

Our faculty is committed to serving our students as both educators and researchers with one-on-one education in our small classes (16:1 on average) while also leading the way in their respective fields. Learn more about our distinguished faculty.

21 new faculty members were welcomed to Cal Lutheran at the start of the 2014 academic year.

For the first time, this group included three full-time faculty for our Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals program. To better serve students in this program, these faculty members’ offices are located at our Woodland Hills Center. While they dedicate two-thirds of their time to the Professionals program, the other third is spent with their companion department in our College of Arts and Sciences or School of Management.

Demonstrative of the strength and achievements of our faculty, Professor Susan Murphy from our Management and Marketing Department was selected to receive the 2015 President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

Murphy joined the Cal Lutheran faculty in 2002 with a strong background in applied behavioral science. Her research focuses primarily on social loafing and the impact of gender and cultural diversity on work group processes. She earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and an MBA from Texas Tech University and a doctorate in human resources management from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Michael Hillis was hired as our new Dean of the Graduate School of Education.

Hillis joins Cal Lutheran following six years in various administrative positions at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. He most recently served as associate dean and director of education programs for the School of Education and Kinesiology at PLU.

Rick Holigrocki, Ph.D. began work as the first dean for our Graduate School of Psychology.

Holigrocki, a licensed clinical psychologist, joined Cal Lutheran after four years as dean of the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Indianapolis.

At the start of our first full school year as partners, Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary welcomed the Rev. Shauna Hannan, Ph.D. to the faculty of PLTS.

The Associate Professor of Homiletics was named a Thrivent Fellow in May.

During the year, PLTS hired three additional faculty members who began teaching this fall.

Upon announcing her retirement from the Superintendent position with Ventura Unified School District, Trudy Tuttle Arriaga, Ed.D. joined the Graduate School of Education faculty.

Arriaga began teaching classes in our master’s and doctoral programs as a Distinguished Educator in Residence this fall. The award-winning administrator announced her retirement in the fall of 2014 after leading the district for 14 years, the longest tenure of any sitting superintendent in Ventura County.

Rahuldeep Gill, an assistant professor of religion, was selected to attend the Teaching Interfaith Understanding seminar at DePaul University over the summer.

Funding from the Henry Luce Foundation covered the cost of conference attendance. It was designed to deepen participants’ knowledge of different faiths, strengthen their teaching and help them develop interfaith curricula.

Our Youth and Family Ministry program was strengthened by the establishment of an endowed chair in Youth and Family Ministry.

This was made possible by a gift from the estate of Darlene and Wilbert Carlson. Colleen Windham-Hughes, Ph.D., M.Div. is the current chair of this program offered as a part of our Theology and Christian Leadership major.

Faculty members were offered two opportunities in the spring of 2015 to attend National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity lecture workshops by Kerry Ann Rockquemore, Ph.D.

Cal Lutheran’s Academic Affairs office, partnered with our Center for Equality and Justice, and the Center for Teaching and Learning to bring Rockquemore to campus for two sessions – “Writing, Procrastination, and Resistance: How to Identify your Writing Blocks and Move Through Them” and “Re-Thinking Mentoring: How to Build Communities of Inclusion, Support and Accountability.” As a result, faculty members planned workshops to implement practices outlined by Rockquemore in the first lecture, and Provost Leanne Neilson is making adjustments to our new faculty mentorship program.

To better support our music students and provide them with real-world experience, we began leasing commercial music studio space in Westlake Village based I-58 Studios.

3. Support student achievement across all programs with equitable treatment for all students, by enhancing student services, and by utilizing the most pedagogically appropriate delivery methods for student learning.

Our retention rate for our traditional undergraduate population proved to be strong for the 2014 first time freshmen, with an 84% retention rate between fall 2014 and fall 2015.

Services available to students to help ensure a good first year include those provided by the Center for Student Success and First Year Experience programs such as the required Freshmen Seminar.

Renovation work to turn the former Dining Common into a new Student Union began with a targeted completion of late fall 2015.

The new Student Union will bring together offices from Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to promote better collaboration between these two areas dedicated to the student experience. The 18,000-square-foot, two-story building will house program offices for multicultural and international students, military veterans, community service, study abroad and career services. It will also be a social gathering place for students, with a moveable event stage and game tables, as well as meeting spaces for student-run clubs and ASCLU-G, Cal Lutheran’s student government.

Melinda Roper, Ed.D. was named Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students in April.

Since serving in the role on an interim basis since July 2014, Roper was promoted from director of student life. She came to Cal Lutheran in 2008 and has worked to reshape transitional experiences for the student body and to strengthen connections between the academic and student affairs programs. Roper also expanded the role of the Campus Awareness, Referral and Education (CARE) Team, which meets biweekly to review student cases related to social, mental health, academic and behavioral issues.

Our four-year graduation rate increased to 67%.

This was a marked improvement over our 2014 rate of 58%. This also puts our four-year graduation rate at or above the rate of many of our comparison institutions.

Our Distance Learning team piloted our first five blended, or hybrid, courses for traditional undergraduates during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Three courses (Biology, Statistics and Philosophy) were offered in the Fall 2014 term and two courses (Public Relations and Biology) were offered in the Spring 2015 term. Each of the courses was designed to be highly interactive, with content being delivered online and experiential application taking place within the classroom.

During the 2014-2015 year, our 509 student athletes earned a variety of accolades.

CLU Sports teams included three SCIAC Championship teams and 83 SCIAC All-Academic athletes. A highlight of the year was Regals athlete Melissa Skiba winning the national title in the 5,000m event at the 2015 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

We increased our Yellow Ribbon awards for qualified students, allowing veterans to attend Cal Lutheran for free.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers a maximum of $20,235 a year in tuition and fees for veterans attending private colleges. Through the Yellow Ribbon program, we now contribute 50% of the tuition and fees not covered by the GI Bill. The remainder is covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs for an unlimited number of qualified undergraduate and graduate students taking classes at any of Cal Lutheran’s locations.

U.S. News & World Report named Cal Lutheran one of the Best Colleges for Veterans, ranking us third among regional universities in the West on the 2015 list.

In order to be ranked, schools must be certified for the GI Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and Servicemembers Opportunity Consortium.

Our Office of Veterans Resources held training for Cal Lutheran faculty and staff members to become VET NET Allies.

The VET NET Ally program develops a network of faculty, staff and administrators who are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for military service members and veterans that study at Cal Lutheran. The program was created by Dr. Marshall Thomas of California State University Long Beach and has been implemented at colleges and universities nationwide. It supports the academic, professional, personal and social success of its targeted group of students while respecting the right to privacy and confidentiality of veterans and service members.

The opening of Ullman Commons brought improved and increased dining services for commuter and graduate students.

With hours extended beyond typical meal times, both Jack’s Corner coffee shop (home to Starbucks) and Ullman To Go cater to graduate and commuter students who may not have had the opportunity to take advantage of a campus meal plan in the past.

A variety of new multimedia resources were added to the Pearson Library collection.

New resources and online databases added to the library’s collection included:

  • The Chronicle of Higher Education ProQuest Newstand - access to the full text of more than 1,300 newspapers, news websites and blogs from leading publishers around the world
  • Underground & Independent Comics, Comix, and Graphic Novels – the first-ever scholarly, primary-source database focused on comic books and graphic novels
  • Kanopy – an online video collection covering topics such a film studies, sustainability and the environment, gender studies, applied science, business, psychology and more

For the first time in Cal Lutheran’s history, donors gave more than $1 million to the CLU Annual Fund.

The CLU Annual Fund directly supports students by filling in the gap in the cost of providing a quality Cal Lutheran education (currently, tuition supports 85% of an undergraduate‘s education). Money is used where it is needed most, from academic programs and scholarships to student clubs and facilities. Learn more and make your gift.

4. Build and modernize sustainable facilities for an environment that sustains social, cultural and intellectual activity while respecting and protecting the planet.

We designed, constructed and equipped our first Active Learning classroom in Pearson Library.

“Interactive, highly participatory, and communal classroom environments have been identified as among the most cutting edge and most important of the benefits of technology-based instruction. As it provides opportunities for enhancing and intensifying these learning advantages, our new Active Learning Classroom offers our students immersion and engagement experiences that exceed their preconceived (and often highly sophisticated) expectations.”

This new state-of-the-art classroom encourages active learning and is the prototype for future classrooms of its kind at Cal Lutheran. It consists of six learning stations, seating six students each. Each station is equipped with a flat-panel television, switching equipment to allow each student to connect and display their work, a writable tabletop surface and magnetic whiteboards. The instructor’s station controls a central screen and projector that can display his or her screen or another learning station’s work.

Ullman Commons opened in August, was officially dedicated in October and has become a central gathering place for students, faculty and staff.

As planned, Ullman Commons attracts all members of the campus community with its improved dining and food service options as well as meeting spaces. An average of 1,450 meals per day were served in Ullman Commons main dining hall in 2014-2015, compared to 684 per day in 2013-2014 in the former Dining Commons. Included in Ullman Commons are:

  • A main Dining Commons with an increased variety of options and made-to-order items prepared by chefs in open stations on the dining room floor. Options include a deli, Mongolian grill, wood-fire pizza oven and dedicated vegan station.
  • Automated ordering stations installed and configured by ISS to enhance on-demand offerings
  • Ullman To Go, a quick service counter featuring premade meals and snacks as well as made-to-order deli sandwiches
  • Jack’s, a full-service Starbucks coffee shop with approximately three times the seating of a typical Starbucks, making it one of the largest in the county
  • Conference rooms with interactive whiteboards, complete sound and video systems
  • Office space for catering and other food service staff
  • Improved kitchen and food preparation areas for our food service provider Sodexo
  • President’s Dining Room for important business meetings and stewardship events

Ullman Commons earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council.

“LEED certification provides a framework of design and construction requirements for sustainable buildings. The rigorous submittal and review process provides an independent verification that these building standards have been achieved. Obtaining LEED certification is a wonderful achievement for Cal Lutheran, but the main benefit is a building that works properly when it opens. We love this structured process that ensures that all building systems have been field-tested and fine-tuned to function as designed, the indoor air quality is extremely pleasant for the occupants, and we can measure our water and energy savings over the long term.”

Examples of sustainable features incorporated into Ullman Commons include:

  • High efficiency HVAC system
  • Low-e, dual pane windows
  • WaterSense plumbing fixtures including dual-flush toilets
  • Zero-VOC interior paint
  • Natural lighting in 95% of spaces

We received a $33,000 grant from California American Water to convert turf to a drought-tolerant landscape.

Along Mountclef Boulevard, between Memorial Parkway and Faculty Street, we replaced existing plants and turf with a decomposed granite parkway and drought-tolerant, native plants. We also retrofitted irrigation to a drip irrigation system. This work is estimated to save 314,888 gallons of water annually.

William Rolland has pledged $4 million to help Cal Lutheran build a new home for our Art Department.

In February, our Board of Regents voted to approve spending $300,000 for the initial planning and design of the William Rolland Art Center on our main Thousand Oaks campus. The facility is planned to be located next to the William Rolland Stadium and Gallery of Fine Art on the north side of our campus. It will house art studios, offices and possibly classrooms, computer labs and a student gallery.

In an effort to further modernize some of our campus’ original buildings, we completed exterior renovations on the Pederson Administration Building.

New low-E, dual-pane windows were installed throughout, minimizing heating and cooling costs. The installation of new windows allowed for the incorporation of more operable windows as well as removal of outdated sunscreens modernizing the building’s exterior.

We improved wireless network capabilities on our Berkeley campus of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.

Additional IT improvements in Berkeley included the installation of streaming technology to the PLTS chapel, facilitating streaming of events such as Commencement.

Our newest location in Westlake Village became fully operational.

Following renovations to the newly leased space, faculty and staff moved into our Westlake Center. The center houses a Community Counseling Center, our Center for Economic Research and Forecasting, our School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurship and a small business incubator.

We expanded our Oxnard Center location.

An additional 2,263 square feet in the existing location was leased to allow for additional office and classroom space for Graduate School of Psychology personnel and students.

We introduced the Cal Lutheran one card system for a variety of student services.

The Cal Lutheran identification card now grants access to buildings (including a pilot group of residence hall suites) as well as to payment for food and other services on campus. Shifting residence hall room access to the ID card eliminates costs and inconvenience associated with traditional key entry.

5. Attract students of high ideals and promise by enhancing regional and national awareness of CLU’s mission, by raising the profiles of students who are drawn to our mission, and by offering new programs and scholarships to attract these students.

University Advancement met the challenge of The John Stauffer Charitable Trust to raise $500,000 to establish the John Stauffer Research Fellows Program for the Chemical Sciences.

The Trust matched our fundraising in order to fund a $1 million endowment for this program. This will enable 10 undergraduate students to participate in chemical science research every summer in perpetuity.

Cal Lutheran’s marketing and branding got a new look for the new school year.

After much research, including focus group testing, a new logo and visual identity for the university was rolled out across all materials and signage at all university offices and facilities. The new look balances tradition with modernity; and has a friendly appeal while still expressing prestige. It has been well received by all stakeholders. Our master brand campaign, “Purpose changes your perspective,” continued in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County, resulting in increased web traffic and interest in the university.

The William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art on our Thousand Oaks campus hosted five exhibitions each attracting hundreds of visitors as well as 12 special events, lectures and tours in 2014-2015.

“Having a museum-grade exhibition space on campus is invaluable. Art students have the opportunity to present their work in a professional gallery; Museum Studies students learn exhibition and public programming design first hand; Marketing Communications students are given the ability to direct real-world marketing campaigns; and the list goes on and on. It offers campus and community visitors access to world-class, international art and learning opportunities, and in having this advantage in experiential learning, is superlative.”

The Western States Youth Gathering, a triennial gathering of Lutheran high school students in ELCA congregations from Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 was held on our campus for the second time.

More than 700 Lutheran youth and their chaperones spent five days on campus together in worship, prayer, small and large group sessions. The schedule also allowed for some fun including field trips to area beaches, food truck meals and concerts. Cal Lutheran faculty and staff were honored to plan this event alongside a multi-synodical, multi-regional team. Events like these are an excellent opportunity for Lutheran students from across the West to get to know our campus.

We expanded our Executive Skills for Pastors workshops to include a session in Arizona.

The five-day workshop led by faculty from our School of Management attracted pastors from throughout the Southwest. It was held at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in January 2015. We also held the five-day workshop on our main campus in Thousand Oaks for the 2nd time in July 2014.

Five new scholarships were established in 2014-2015.

New scholarships were set up to provide funding for students in a variety of programs including History, Computer Science, Teaching, Chemistry and PLTS’ Master of Divinity. In total, more than $2.6 million was raised for scholarships during the fiscal year.

The university hosted a variety of cultural and educational events on-and off-campus to raise awareness about Cal Lutheran, its mission and its stellar programs and students.

Popular annual events such as the Corporate Leaders Breakfast Series, the Mathews Leadership Forum, and Hats & High Tea attracted record attendance in 2014-2015. Events are publicized online and through a biannual printed calendar mailer.

A record-setting 1,136 students and their family members attended Admitted Student Day in April.

“Data has indicated that students who visit our campus have a higher likelihood of enrolling, so events such as Admitted Student Day are essential. As Cal Lutheran attracts a wider audience, this event is an exceptional opportunity to showcase the breadth of resources we can offer to our prospective students. With record attendance this past year, followed by record enrollment this fall, we are hopeful the rising popularity of this event will continue to support our recruitment efforts.”

Campus visits increased 15% overall following the successful implementation of the All-Access program in 2013-2014. Admitted Student Day provides admitted students the opportunity to visit campus and explore academic, social and spiritual opportunities available to them at Cal Lutheran. The day’s agenda includes sample lectures, sessions on financial aid information, study abroad and research, student clubs and activities, and athletics as well as lunch on campus.

International student recruitment efforts continued with the 2014-2015 student population coming from 66 countries representing a variety of faiths and cultures.

During 2014-2015, we resumed travel and recruitment in South America after a 10-year absence that yielded four new students from the region for the fall 2015 class. We also hosted a record number of international student counselors at Cal Lutheran. All efforts resulted in new students from 14 different counties enrolling for fall 2015.

KCLU, our NPR station, celebrated its 20th anniversary in October.

Following a humble beginning in 1994, KCLU now serves all of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties as well as parts of San Luis Obispo. In honor of this milestone, we hosted The Capitol Steps at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza. In only its second year, the station’s Sustaining Membership program revenue doubled to more than $60,000 in addition to one-time gifts and pledges.

Our popular first-year student leadership orientation experience, Telios, expanded to include an “urban adventure” in the San Francisco Bay area.

The Telios program has always included a recreation-based trip to locations such as Yosemite National Park. In 2014, students had the option to participate in a service-focused program in San Francisco and on our Berkeley campus of PLTS.

By the numbers

Financial Report 2014-2015

California Lutheran University did well financially during the fiscal year ending May 31, 2015. Total institutional assets increased to $315.6 million, up from $309.1 million in the previous year. Net assets (total assets less liabilities) increased to $225.3 million, up from $215.3 million, due to operating gains.

Revenues and Expenses

Due to good operating performance and investment returns, revenue exceeded expenses by $10.0 million. Total revenues and gains are $116.8 million, down from $123.5 million in the previous fiscal year primarily due to higher investment returns in the endowment in the prior year. Operating revenue increased to $109.5 million from $107.9 million in the prior year, while non-operating revenue was down to $7.3 million from $15.6 million in the prior year primarily due to the fluctuations in the value of the endowment.

Net tuition revenues in 2014–2015 decreased to $77.0 million, down from $79.0 million in the previous year. (All of the revenue figures above are net calculations. They do not count tuition covered by institutional scholarships and grants: $40.9 million in 2014–2015 and $39.0 million in 2013–2014.)

Expenses increased to $106.8 million for the fiscal year, up from $98.8 million.

Balance Sheet

Total assets increased by $6.5 million, liabilities decreased by $3.5 million, and net assets increased by $10.0 million. Cash increased to $52.6 million, from $48.2 million.

Contributions receivable increased to $7.5 million, from $7.2 million. During the year, the value of Cal Lutheran’s endowment increased by $6.7 million to $92.9 million due to market value changes on endowment assets of $3.8 million, transfer of surplus from operations of $2.3 million, new gifts of $3.8 million offset by distribution to scholarships of $3.2 million.

The endowment fund helps to ensure the University’s long-term financial health and stability and to provide an affordable education, including scholarships and grants, for current and future generations of students. Donors’ gifts are invested in perpetuity with a portion of the income available for university needs and the remainder reinvested to maintain future buying power.

Our property, plant and equipment increased to $136.2 million, from $126.6 million in the previous year, primarily due to the completion of the dining commons offset by depreciation.

Donor Contributions

Donor contributions are a significant factor in the continued financial strengthening of Cal Lutheran. Charitable giving during the period consisted of 23,206 gifts and pledges from 10,689 donors, including alumni, parents of students and alumni, friends, churches, corporations, foundations and other organizations.
