In the Shadow of Death

Piri Bodnar

Horror presides over the camp
We hear the victims' dreadful cries
Young and old, righteous and wise
Marching to their death tonight

Tear soaked faces, bewildered eyes
Children trembling and petrified
Babies torn from their mother's arm
Heaven and earth clashing tonight

Parents, desperate, beg the guards
Have mercy on our precious ones
So frail, so weak and small
Please, don't hurt them, grant them life

The chamber is locked, the shower starts
Victims are choking, losing their minds
Scratching the walls, screaming and crawling
But no way out, no place to hide

Naked bodies with vacant eyes
Dumped on each other into the cart
Their torture ended, their pain gone
The soul journey begun

The flames are coiling toward the sky
The martyrs' ashes cover the ground
Smoke fills up the deadly night
And the massacre goes on and on

We live each moment in terror and fear
The Angel of Death always lurking
Loved ones perish in front of our eyes
Our world has crumbled, but still we
     survive
