My Life as an Actress
Jody Biergiel
I laugh when my parents say they need
some time apart,
And I cry when you kiss me.
It's like when the sound and the picture
are off at the movies:
The technician is sweating in his box
above the theater.
He peers through glasses that flash with
the rhythm of the frantic reel,
As he fiddles with this and that knob.
The audience looks back and glares up at the
beam of light traveling over their heads.
It is supposed to transport some semblance of
truth.
But all they see on the screen is a girl
Whose words don't match her mouth.
