Arabian Seduction

Katie Popiel

Sun climbs slowly over sand-colored rooftops
stretching warm rays down dark alleys.
A haunting wail of the muezzin drifts
down
from the minaret to shatter the last cool hibernation of night.

We rise from comfortable dreams-
Persian caves and Allah's promised reward. Our sandy feet wake in the clear warm water of a mosque fountain. Desert plants stretch up languidly to morning's humid air.

Air is thick and quiet, heavy with
heat and thoughts lifted to the sacred Kaaba Stone.
All but our eyes are wrapped and hidden away, so
We may become closer to Allah in our modesty.
There is no greater temptress than the eyes.
