Wyoming Eulogy
Meghan Calhoun Johnston
(In memory of Matthew Shepard)
I write of the loneliness of Wyoming,
But you know it better than I, scarecrow—
Silent and crucified to a snow fence,
Helpless shipwreck on the prairie's ocean,
Engulfed by the cruel wind which drowns out screams.
I spin my daydreams on the Laramie plains,
But you mark them better than I, scarecrow—
Witness to the beauty of the rainbow broken,
Scattered into the blue and green expanse
Engulfing you, small figure scarlet-scarred.
I weep for the fate you found in Wyoming,
But you trusted better than I, scarecrow—
Unafraid to throw your secrets to the winds,
Undiminished by the ravens squawking protests at your grave,
Unforgotten.
