You were grandest of all
In Pompeii
Isolated and aloof
Among the tourists
Your extra large orange dress
Eclipsing the hard blue sky.
I watched you
From the opposite side of the crumbled coliseum
(Where God knows what had realized itself)
I saw the perfect tilt of your burgundy umbrella
Against the sun
I saw how burgundy and orange mattered most
How they opaqued the hot August day
How perfectly they drew their angled lines -
Signifying themselves - and themselves only.
