Jack Vettriano's Painting:
Cocktails and Broken Hearts

Avrielle McGill

What is he whispering tonight?
Is he telling her that there are jewels
gleaming across far distant seas,
In long-forgotten caves?
Or perhaps he is telling her
that he stumbled across her shopping list
and that she still must purchase some milk
on her way home tonight.
Is he confessing he has two sons, and one daughter
with eyes just as blue as her mother's?
Or does he whisper with coal in his eyes
and fire on his lips
that he is looking to devour her
before the long night is over.
Or perhaps, leaning casually closer
from behind the bar, amidst the smell
of cigarette ash which lingers in her hair,
He, the lone bartender, is telling her
that there is no moon out tonight
and therefore it would be wise for her
to abide by street light, eyes down
and walking swiftly.
