'You've Never Seen the Coast'
Rachel Eskesen
The phone rings with, the announcement that you love me! and that
your girlfriend is doing fine,
that Iowa is beautiful baskets of yellow-kernelled corn, just like
when we slept with improvised star - sprinkled comforters
and rolled our backs down on green meadow mattresses
and you' 11 miss gazing into the ocean
rolling up tlie sand on the bouldered jetties,
you gently breathe that you miss me most with the morning,
greeting tousled blonde hair and pillow lines on my flushed cheeks...
and the beach sand slipping between your toes, you' 11 miss us,
wrapped in plaid flannel blankets
speckled with sand and sticky with, a salty mist where we
huddled together beside the black soot fire pit,
waiting for the flames to self-ignite.
