Nearly Perfect

Brooke Bain

Beneath the silky night sky,
Your hands are in my hair
And around by body,
The ducks quack mildly
And the full moon shines again in the tranquil pond,
How nearly perfect it is,
"Nearly" only because no words will express
How I feel
At this moment-
About life,
About you.

I can only smile
You smile back
Your eyes starry, your teeth twinkling
In the most content single moment of my life.
The hectic, trying day
Melts away now,
The air seems crisper
The trees more life-like--
Foregrounded in bas-relief
Against the mundane backdrop of highway.

The stillness p| the water, real and quiet,
Might swallow us.
I turn to you
Terrified by your beauty.
Though I long to kiss you all over,
The serenity of fie scenery prevails,
I'm in no rush,
I lie back,
Enveloped in my feelings for you,
I watch the tips of the trees ruffling the smooth sky,
Tickling the nearly perfect moon,
As close to heaven as I am myself
On our nearly perfect night together.
