Moon Traveler
Matthew C. Powell
Looking up at the moon, a young boy wanted
to touch it, to own a piece of it.
It was held in the blue daytime sky,
a half-moon in bed with a blue sheet pulled across its body
So the boy reached up
and left the ground, straining to touch the moon above.
Looking back down, his neighborhood was spread beneath him.
Neighbors watched the boy grow smaller
to their ground-locked eyes
as he reached higher.
Closer. Closer.
And as his feet touched the earth again
they all laughed at him
but the boy just smiled and looked skyward.
The others returned to their respective rooms
nd grew very quiet.
And in private they smiled
as they took out their own moon rocks from long ago.
