Escape
Michael D. Emery
Summer homes along the beach
and week-end trips to the zoo
give brief escapes
from dead-end jobs
and free-way parking lots,
and other things that keep apart
the ones who love each other,
or pretend to love each other,
but just can't find the time
to be sure, but punch their cards
and live in doubt.
Fast-beat, stop-n-go, take-a-number
rhythm stops on weekends
in the green of trees,
and the pink of flowers,
and the rolling hills of grass;
in small parks where children laugh,
and lovers laugh,
and God laughs with them all.
