The All-American FATHER

Micah Reitan

I baby sat lit'l Jamie Smith for his parents last Saturday night.
We talked about his family over
kool-aid and macaroni and cheese

Jamie got out his latest family photograph album
and brought it to the kitchen table.
He sat down next to me and opened the big book excited.

He pointed at his mother who was in black and white.
"Who's she?" I asked.
"That's Mommy. That's my Mommy." he said happily.

Jamie turned to the next page
there he was with his two older sisters in NYC
"And those three. Who are they?" I questioned.
He smiled as he said, "That's Cindy, Paula, and me.."

Excited he turned the page
to see his father holding him in his arms.
Confused he looked at his father.
Jamie frowned and he waved as a tear jumped from his eye.

"Who's he?" I asked carefully.
"He?" Jamie responded without the joy in his voice.
"That's Bye-bye," he said as he waved at the fading photo.
