The Mecca of the Oaks
Joel B. Topping
Chrome plated peach
malls, full of the tawdry,
the expensively cheap,
service industry jobs, 5 bucks
an hour for virtual
SLAVERY,
teenagers roaming like
herds of trendy lemmings,
obsessed with Cool,
walking brightly plated
and feathered,
craniums running at
35 psi,
Teenager chicks moving
along, flourescent apparel,
painted skin,
Grinding their gears,
flashing their lights,
Youthful
Immaturity,
Hardened
Innocence,
Yuppie shops
selling coffee for twice
the price,
the smell of frying and
Plastic,
Yuppies and their
3.2 kids,
Looking for expensive
symbols, Running,
Thinking of business,
holding their child's hand,
Quality Time,
the Parade of the Young Republicans,
Bastions of Complacency,
Conservative in politics,
Liberal in sentiment,
Ambidextrous fence straddlers,
Seeking Quality Time,
Whatever that means,
On the picket fence of Reality,
The air is heavy and thick,
I set and think of
my girlfriend —
strange, exotic,
dark Norwegian Korean German,
with laughing eyes and
good character, dependable,
interesting, deep, sympathetic,
compassionate, for real,
Too bad, it's too early,
too much immaturity on
my part,
timing is off,
180° out,
If you push it,
it'll backfire through the
carb throat,
balls of flames, noise
nothing working in harmony,
even though all the parts
are
there
The differences —
God
she doesn't
know Him,
I wish she did.
Agony
Doubt
Resignation.
The mall,
The mecca of Youth,
Bulwark of Capitalism,
Storehouse of fashion,
The melting pot,
I wish I was home.
