When She Smiled
Andrew Sipos
The jukebox swirls and grinds its way out
of the hollow and shady corner.
That music, that Devil's chant
Crashing down on my nose like a mad
Baseball bat.
The beat, the swing,
A Grand-Slam homer
Against my brittle chin.
That music, bringing her back like
The smoldering Phoenix.
I thought she was dead,
Or least I hoped so.
Six months and four days ago
She ruined my life.
But I thought I had forgotten.
Not Her, Not that song!
Not Again, Never Again.
Not "our" song when we feverishly rolled.
Those same sweet notes prick my lips like
Frostbitten barbwire.
It could have been worse
She could have laughed when we said good-bye
Instead she only smiled.
