Close Encounter

James Speegle

You're staring as if to memorize the lines in my face,
And in my mouth I feel the taste of love's bittersweet
Regret as I pause to light another cigarette,
A drink or two more and neither one of us will feel or
care.
I came in to get warm from the winter wind and found you
In the corner looking for a friend to take some of your
troubles away for awhile,
So I turned and got caught in the flash of your mega-ton
smile.
Looser and looser in the back booth we've become washed in
the beer light as today becomes tonight,
The walls are coming down as the drinks flow and flow,
As we both start to look like someone the other used to know,
So at least for tonight let's play the part and hold one
Another so close and tight then watch each other's
Reaction when we wake in the morning's light.
We're both calling each other someone else's name as we
Hide inside each other's pain,
I feel the need of nature's call and I wonder if I can get
Up and not fall.
You'll be here I know when I get back because now we
Know with each other tonight we'll shack,
As I sit and put another one away I can't help wonder
If we'll end up hating each other in the morning's light,
I'll wake up with a hangover and you,
Then I'll have to try to think quick with half a head,
What to say and do.
So for awhile what the hell, kiss me and hold my hand and
We'll make each other happy to be a woman and man,
One thing bothers me just a bit, who'll drive the car?
If we can still see well enough to find it.
