Coming Home

Scott Yang

I volunteer at a
Retirement home on
Friday nights.
You know, it's one of those
Places where people go when
They retire and
Call home sweet home.
I know others get a kick
Doing something else,
But somehow serving dinner
Has something comparable.
A pour of coffee here,
Decaf of course,
And some water there,
Tap or ice?
A smile and a laugh always and a
"Good evening Mrs. Sinclair," trumpets,
"And how are you?"
They love me, I admit
Guess that's why I serve there.
The folks in Row Five
Are always curious about me.
"Where you from?"
"Do you go to college?"
"Gotta girlfriend?"
And so one night, as always,
Mrs. Poole asked,
"What are you doing tonight like
All other young people?"
"Just going home," with a smile I replied.
And with a smile she also returned,
And said, "At least you have a
Home to return to."
I looked at her and, again,
Tried to smile back, and
Turned away to finish the coffee round.
