The Fountain

Deanna Schroeder

"I am God" he yells
from the top
of a fountain
in the middle of the campus
at lunch hour;
water trickles down rock sculpture and fills the base;
crowds gather
and he preaches
of the sin of fraternities
and the Grateful Dead;
water drains from a small hole
as the police shut off the fountain;
"Touch me
and acknowledge I am God,
you failed me once!"
the fountain echoes without water;
single droplets drip off the edges
and fall to the drained basin;
police hands reach up
and grab him by the ankles to pull down "Now I'm God!"
people trickle away from the fountain drained
single people think of falling off edges and the fountain is turned back on.
