A Father and his Son
Chet Warwick
A Father and his son walked hand in hand
down the darkened path
on a cool, misty night.
Wisdom filled the air.
The son looked curious
as thoughts and wonder
floated through his expanding mind.
A yearning burned inside of him
for an answer to question. . . .
"Father," he finally opened,
"It is dark out and I can't see much at all, yet I feel secure."
A few moments passed
as the Father listened and digested the statement. And He began to explain, in short, simple wording.... "It is because my hand covers and protects yours." - And the son grabbed on tighter.
They continued to walk.
And as they rounded a corner
the son felt a sharp cool breeze
creep its way through his layers of clothing.
And again he became curious. . . .
"Father,
the wind is sharp like the cold steel of a knife, yet I feel warm."
And again the Father listened with love,
and thought wisely of an explanation he was to give.... "Son," he replied, "You are warm
because you feel my love for you
radiating heat and energy
into your heart."
- And the son basked in the warmth.
The two continued their walk
and as they began up a slow hill
the son began to hear music.
But he heard the music with his mind
and not his ears.
This too had to be explained. . . .
And so he uttered,
"Father,
the night is so silent. The air is so still.
Yet I hear music like a thousand birds singing." The Father smiled
for he was happy to hear these words. . . .
And He said,
"The music you hear is the happiness you feel knowing that I am here with you - for you."
- And the son listened with intensity.
The Father and the son came to the end of their walk. The son turned to his Father,
gave Him an embrace, and a kiss, and a smile. He still looked curious, however,
but before he could get his next question out
the Father said. . . .
"Son,
there is a reason I do all this for you. There is a reason I will do more for you. Tonight has only been the beginning
of a thousand nights
in which you will ask a question
and receive an answer.
You will know, in time,
that with Me, you will always feel secure; with Me, you will always feel warm; with Me, you will always hear music.
- And you will also learn son,
that if for some reason
you are not with me,
you can bet on the fact
that I'll be with you.
