Juxtaposition

Today our local newspaper
places Mother Teresa’s long night
of spiritual darkness up against this news:
bricklayer from Belfast bites the head
off his girlfriend’s pet snake, says
it tasted lovely—both stories crowned
by a new probe into the death
of Nicholas II, Russia’s last czar,
whose remains may not even be his.
Does a snake still beguile us,
tempt our tastes in matters of faith,
love and death? Or are we free
to laugh, as skeptics do, at
everything we read?
