He Said

Stephanie Crabe

He said, “Pick Me!”
And you said, “It’s ok,
As long as you follow your heart
You know you’ve gone the right way.”

He said “Pick me,
Pick me or I’m gone”
You said, “I’ll be here for you,
Even if you move on”

He said, “Pick me,
Even though I’m not good”
You said “I can’t tell you
What you shouldn’t or should”

He said, “Pick me,
Because I want you to”
You said, “Only pick me,
If it’s what you truly want to do”

He said, “Pick me,”
And that’s what I did,
Even though I knew in my heart,
I should have picked you instead.

He said, “Pick me,”
Again and again.
Even after I’d picked him
All the way ‘til the end

He said, “Pick me,”
Until I finally said “No.
You aren’t the one for me.
I should’ve realized that long ago.”

He said, “Pick me,”
But it was you who was right.
I should have listened to you,
That Wednesday night.

He said, “Pick me.”
Now I know it was a mistake
But you’re not one to judge
On mistakes that we make

He said, “Pick me,”
But now I’m picking you.
You’re giving me another chance
For what’s a year and a half overdue.

He said, “Pick me,”
You said, “Follow your heart.”
And now that I’ve learned this
“We” can finally start.
