"Proud Shades of Blue"

Karen Emmert

Proud Shades of Blue

She is a queen.
Not of hearts but diamonds; of strength and pristine beauty.
She belongs immortalized on the cards she strives to master with bruised hands.
Hands that thrive in the timeless elegance of cocktails and cigarettes.
The hospital bedding sheens as it loosely encages her diminutive form; seconds way from the next snide statement, although it wont begin to burn as the thousands that have already come and gone.
She belongs to no other. She’s her own. Only hers.
She sits regally, commanding their waltz before her, so much like the ones she has grown accustom to within the warm stars of summer.
She captures attention and attracts various reactions.
She demands structure from a mouth capped in glossy dentures.
Pride pumps through her veins competing with notorious amounts of caffeine.
She embodies refinement; striking enough to make her twines of silver substitute for a crown.
She sings saucy words, hums hymns and dances alone if necessary.
She is coated in independence and saturated in stubbornness.

She is noble.

She winks.
She smiles.

She is notably in love with life, with me, with our likeness.
With the compassion that lies in our eyes,
Our eyes linked with proud shades of blue.
