A Humble Prayer
Elizabeth Clark
Oh Lord,
what I wouldn't give
to live my life as a leaf.
A stern green leaf,
atop the highest bow,
on the tallest oak,
the wind caressing my surface,
sunlight, kissing my skin
flirting with the air,
drops of rain running off my face,
whispering in the breeze,
just blowing carelessly through time.
And then at the end of my life,
to let my green ignorance fade,
to radiate bright yellow, brilliant orange, and red,
to change my colors,
and be beautiful in my death.
And finally to float swiftly through the air,
down to the ground,
soaring in glory,
as I am no longer atop the world,
but one with it.
