A Promise from The Heart
Darcy Culley
You told me the sun would shine again
After the rain
And I believed you
Even when I left for school every day
In my little green raincoat
With the whales on the lining
And my purple umbrella
Opened to the sky.
I skipped and laughed
And splashed in the puddles
never doubting
That the sun would come out
Because you told me it would.
As I grew up
The rain continued
And still you made promises
Of sun and better days ahead
As the windshield wipers on my car
Clicked methodically.
We changed the wiper blades a few times
Because the rain never seemed to stop
And 1 kept driving onward
Always in search of the sun.
And although I knew you had no right
To promise me things that were beyond your control
I believed in you anyway
And kept driving.
And now 1 never wear my raincoat
I don't even own an umbrella
And I think my wiper blades are broken
But 1 don't care
Because Daddy, you were right —
I have found the sun.
