Sonnet for a Sunday Morning in Chicago
Margaret Wold
We woke at dawn to sound of steepled bells
that rang with wild wonder from each spire.
A thousand sanctuaries joined the swells
that made the city into one vast choir.
Wake up, wake up! the call to worship rang,
the feast awaits, the banquet is prepared,
Come sing the songs that other voices sang
and eat the Bread that others long have shared.
So Dad got out the suit that had a vest,
the boys put on their shirts of many hues,
Mom shed her apron, donned her Sunday best,
and I put on my patent leather shoes!
We walked to church with ringing all around,
hand-in-hand, dressed up, and.Glory bound!
