She wanted a ring
Todd Bersley
She looked at me with diamond eyes,
and I knew I was in trouble.
She wanted a ring, a simple band of gold
would do, she said, and I gave it to her.
How could I resist?
The necklaces and bracelets I gave her before
really didn't mean that much after all this time,
but the ring ... Oh, I love it! she proclaimed
as I slipped it on her finger. She kissed
me and hugged me and said we were engaged,
while I laughed and insisted again and again
that I would love her as long as she wore that
gold band. She beamed like a child
when I went home that night, and I believe
I did too after five bourbons on ice.
All she wanted was a ring, she said.
I knew she wanted more.
But who was I to give her more?
And when she cooed and coddled
because I gave her that ring, and we made love
like we never had before,
who was I to refuse?
She wanted a ring, and I left her
with a child who grew up and asked why
she still wore her wedding band of gold.
