I Wore Her Satin Dresses
Margaret Wold
I wore her satin dresses every day
and tried in flights of fancy to be her.
What did a mistress think or do or say?
What made him give her fancy gowns to wear?
I thought her husky laughter made him gay
while all the time she wished she were his wife,
and even when she did not want to play,
she must pretend that she preferred this life.
She gave me hand-me-downs, her cast off clothes.
No cleaner could erase the rare perfumes
whese fragrance did not mask the deep-felt woes
that I felt sure lived in her costly rooms.
But then, I thought, perhaps she liked her lot
and as for me, I liked the clothes I got!
