The Lavish Mrs. Loeman

Annie Merz

The folds of skin shook when she sang the hymns
And the congregation searched for the boisterous
         lady with the fake eyelashes.
Somehow she talked the pastor into letting her
        read the gospel lesson
But no one heard the message.
Her tight sweater dress even caught my
        brother's attention
Who usually bobbed his sleepy head.

Still more amazing: her husband.
He calmly bent his skinny arm
Where she could latch her wrist weighted with jewels
Escorting his pride and joy down the aisle.

Children stared and a few sneezed,
        choked with her wild scent.
Before leaving the sanctuary, the men
        closed their eyes
and Thanked God they weren't married to the
        Lavish Mrs. Loeman.
